How to Switch Business Energy Supplier in the UK

Business energy works very differently from domestic energy. Contracts are fixed for a set term, there's no national price cap, and missing your renewal window can leave you on costly out-of-contract rates. Here's how to switch confidently.

Know your contract end date and renewal window

Business energy contracts have a fixed term and a renewal window during which you're allowed to agree a new deal. Outside that window, suppliers may not let you switch, and if you do nothing you can be moved onto expensive out-of-contract or deemed rates.

The first step is always to find your contract end date and diarise the renewal window well in advance.

Gather the right information before comparing

Accurate quotes need accurate inputs. Have these to hand:

  • Your current supplier and contract end date
  • Your meter point numbers (MPAN for electricity, MPRN for gas)
  • Recent annual consumption in kWh
  • Your business address and meter type (e.g. half-hourly)

Compare on more than headline unit rate

The cheapest unit rate isn't always the cheapest contract. Standing charges, contract length, and whether the price is fully fixed all affect what you actually pay. Look at the total estimated annual cost, not just pence per kWh.

Letting one team manage the comparison, the paperwork and the switch removes the admin and the risk of missing your window.

Frequently asked questions

Can I switch business energy mid-contract?

Generally no — business contracts are fixed for their term. You agree your next contract during the renewal window before the current one ends.

What happens if I miss my renewal window?

You can be moved onto out-of-contract or deemed rates, which are usually much higher. Setting a renewal reminder well ahead of time avoids this.
